The Honourable Benjamin Wier built his residence
in 1863.  A prominent Halifax businessman, he was
a member of the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia
and subsequently became a Senator in 1867.  The home was subsequently occupied by
other prominent Canadians including two Fathers of Confederation.  The first was William
Alexander Henry and the second Sir Adams G. Archibald, who became the first Secretary
of State in the first federal government under Sir John A. MacDonald and later the first
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba. These gentlemen would be at home here today.  The
interior is redolent of warmth, vitality and elegance.  It radiates the confidence and
ambition of its place and period, not unlike today.

Benjamin Wier House is also home to the Finnish Consulate in Nova Scotia.  It is located
in downtown Halifax on Hollis Street directly across from the Lieutenant Governor's
Residence.
